Administrative / Biographical History

Grampian Police was a regional police force, formed in 1975 from the merger of the Scottish North East Counties Constabulary (see POL/S) and the Aberdeen City Police (see POL/AC). It covered the local authority areas of Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, and its operations were overseen by a police authority with representatives from each of the three local authorities.

Its headquarters were in Queen Street, Aberdeen.

In 2013 the eight regional police forces were merged to form Police Scotland, the national police force for Scotland.

For information about the predecessor forces, see the relevant collection level description.

Arrangement

Catalogued by Police Scotland prior to their transfer to Aberden City & Aberdeenshire Archives.

Original references used by Police Scotland for the predecessor force's records are given in the Alt_Ref_No field. The references for the Grampian Police material have had 'POL/' added to the front of the reference used by Police Scotland, but otherwise Police Scotland's arrangement has been retained. Added to CALM in 2017.

Transferred to the Archives by the Police Service of Scotland from Woodhill House between 2014 and 2016. Some items in the Aberdeenshire Constabulary collection had previously been deposited with the archive in 2011 as accession 449, and catalogued as DD486/C, but were withdrawn in 2004.

Accruals

No accruals to the records of the pre-1975 forces are expected.

Some Grampian Police material worthy of assessment for permanent preservation has been retained by Police Scotland, primarily relating to the operational response function.

A collection of display items remains with the Police Museum: photographic prints (the negatives produced by the Identification Bureau have been transferred to the Archive) and personal papers donated by officers.
