Papers of The Society, consisting of:
The Society was founded by J.R. Magrath and was sometimes referred to as Magrath's Society. The exact date of its formation is not known but it seems to have been in existence from at least 1871 (see note in MS. Eng. c. 7022, fol. 19). The Society met once a term for a dinner, at which the host presented a paper relating to the administration of the University. Membership was restricted and there were usually no more than 13 members present at a dinner. The last meeting of The Society was in Michaelmas Term, 1980 and at some stage after this dinner, it was considered to be defunct.
Entry to read in the Library is permitted only on presentation of a valid reader's card (for admissions procedures see http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/specialcollections).
The papers were given to the library by Dr. K.H. Segar in 1994.
