Administrative / Biographical History

Rita Gascoigne was born in Bedford, 1923. She worked as a Clerk for the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes at the beginning of the Second World War before training as a nurse in St. Helier Hospital, Surrey. She lived in the hospital during her training from 1943 to 1946. After qualifying she also qualified as a midwife, before moving on to work at a nursing home in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. She returned to Bedford c. 1948 to care for her mother and began working at a private nursing home, before moving on to Bedford General Hospital where she first worked as junior nurse on an ear nose and throat ward, before becoming a ward sister on the surgical ward. In 1952, she left nursing to get married and raise a family. In 1960, Gascoigne and her family moved to Thame, where she began working again as a district nurse for Oxfordshire County Council.
