Administrative / Biographical History

The University College of North Wales (UCNW) was established in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, in 1884, becoming a constituent part of the University of Wales in 1893. Cymdeithas y Cymric ('the Cymric Society') was formed to represent the interests of the Welsh speaking students at the College. However the expansion of UCNW led to growing concern about the status of the Welsh language and Welsh students within the College. In 1976 a campaign against the College's language policy by the Cymric led to the expulsion of four students, including the society's president. This led to the creation of Undeb Myfyrwyr Colegau Bangor (UMCB, 'Bangor Colleges' Students Union'), an unofficial union for the Welsh students, resisting the Anglicisation of the College and promoting the use of the Welsh language. UMCB subsequently became Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Bangor and is now part of the main Students' Union. The Cymric continued as a society organising social events for the Welsh students.
