Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Primrose Hill official number 91,294, was a British sailing vessel, built of iron at Liverpool by Messrs Thomas Royden & Sons, in 1886. Her dimensions were length 301ft, breadth 42ft and a depth in the hold of 24ft, and at the time of her loss was the property of the Primrose Hill Company Ltd, Mr Williams Price, of 17 Tower Buildings, Water Street, Liverpool. She was a four Masted barque and carried two lifeboats. The Primrose Hill arrived in Liverpool from San Francisco, and after unloading her inward cargo, she commenced loading a general cargo, and when laden she had about 3500 tons dead weight on board. The crew as complete was 34 hands all told, and on the 23rd of December 1900 left Liverpool docks bound for Vancouver, then anchored in the Mersey. On the following day commeded by Mr Joseph Wilson, who had been in command of her for the last 12 years, she left the river being towed by the screw tug "William Jolliffe". Having lost the tow The Primrose Hill hit rocks at Penrhyn Mawr off Holyhead and sunk with only one survivor.
