Scope and Content

The collection contains Osborne Gordon's correspondence, financial records and diaries, as well as the probate records relating to his estate. The remaining papers are legal papers of his brother and his family, relating mainly to conveyances of property in Shropshire, marriage settlements and probate matters.

Administrative / Biographical History

Osborne Gordon (1813-83) was born in Broseley, Shropshire. He was educated at Bridgnorth school and then at Christ Church, Oxford. He later served as a proctor, a censor at Christ Church and a University Examiner. In 1860 he was presented to the living of Easthampstead in Berkshire. During his incumbency, the parish schools were enlarged and the church was rebuilt. For further information see the Dictionary of National Biography.
