Scope and Content

A large volume, written mostly during the years 1733 - 1745, and mostly in the hand of Cadwaladr Davies. Consists mainly of poems, carols and a few cywyddau, being the fruit of poets from the geographical areas known as Penllyn, Edeyrnion, Cerrigydrudion and Hiraethog, north Wales. The poems date from the mid 18th century.

Includes also notes on astronomy, meteorology, interpreting dreams, remedies for wounds and diseases, and copies of legal documents.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cadwaladr Davies was the schoolmaster at Tre'r-ddl near Corwen, Merioneth in 1740. Little is known about him, other than he was a poet, and paid rent for a house and cottage to a John Humphreys of Maerdy, near Gwyddelwern, from 1729-1739. The contents of this volume also testify that he took an interest in astronomy, meteorology, interpreting dreams, concocting remedies for wounds and diseases and legal matters.
