Administrative / Biographical History

Jackman's Nursery, which claimed to have begun in 1810, was certainly in existence in 1832 when the first George Jackman (1802-69) dissolved his partnership with Henry Jackman (1216/1/3). However the Jackman family may well have been nurserymen on a site at Goldsworth, Woking, from the early 19th century. A copy of court roll of the manor of Woking in 1831 (1475/3) contains the presentment of the death of Sarah, widow of William Jackman the elder of Woking, nurseryman, who had been admitted to various lands in Goldsworth in 1802 and 1823. The second George Jackman (1837-1887) made the name of the business by his successful experiments in hybridising clematis (1216/3). After his unexpected death the firm had to move from its original site round the family home 'The Hollies' at St John's, Woking, to 'Bedfords', nearby; Arthur George Jackman (1866-1926) and other members of the family took it over in 1894 (1216/5/3), and in 1967 Mr G R Jackman, of the next generation, sold the business. It was at this time, when it again moved its premises, that Mr Jackman deposited the surviving papers.
