Matthew Atkinson: Correspondence and papers

The papers relate principally to financial matters, to Atkinson's personal finances and to family trusts, as well as to the affairs of the Penrith Bank. Many of the letters are from Nathaniel Clayton of Newcastle and Chesters, who had married Atkinson's cousin Dorothy and was a trustee of the will of Atkinson's father, and from his sons John and Michael.

These documents were found among the papers of David Maelgwyn Joslin (1925-70), Professor of Economic History in the University of Cambridge 1965-70. It is likely that he had acquired them as raw material for his research into English country banking. They were deposited on indefinite loan in Cambridge University Library by Professor Joslin's widow in 1971.
