Scope and Content

The pedigree was drawn up by Charles Lynegar, antiquary, of Dublin, who contributes a Latin preface. The descent is traced in Latin, Irish and English in three parallel columns from Maximilian Carl of Hapspruch, Germany (fl. 830). At the head are three coats of arms in colour: the first of Walter Pritchard, grandfather of James Pritchard: Party per pale, first ermine, on a chevron or three pheons sable between as many lions passant guardant counterchanged of the second and azure: secondly, argent, an oaktree azure eradicated proper, acorned or; crest: a chevalier armed at all points capapie, holding in his dexter hand a truncheon or. The second of James Pritchard: ermine, on a cheveron or three pheons sable between as many lions passant guardant, counterchanged of the second azure; crest: the same. The third of James Wyer, grandfather of James Pritchard: party per pale, first, or two lions passant guardant sable, armed and langued gules within a border vert charged with eight stars or; secondly, argent a cross gules fretted or; crest; an armed arm holding a sword proper, pommelled and hilted or, thrust through a dragon's head vert. beneath the first and second coats is the motto 'Fides non timet' and beneath the third the motto 'Audaces fortuna invat.' Certificates of authenticity are signed by John Macarell, Lord mayor of Dublin, 23 August 1739; and by John [Linegar], Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Stephen [Mac Egan], Bishop of Meath, Michael [Mac donagh] Bishop of Kilmore and Patrick Fitzsimons, Chief Notary of Dublin, 25 August 1739. A certificate is given of correct copying by the copyist Pietro d'Arone, Naples, 1 March 1776, with attestations by 'N.C.' of the same date (in Latin) and by Miguel O'Dea 4 March 1776 (in Spanish). A note, signed John P. O'Byrne, is added in English concerning the descendants of a younger son of Walter Pritchard.
