Petrie, Sir (William Matthew) Flinders (18531942), Egyptologist, was born at Ecclesbourne Cottage, Maryon Road, Charlton, near Greenwich, on 3 June 1853, the only child of William Petrie (18211908) and his wife, Anne (18121892), the daughter of Captain Matthew Flinders RN, the navigator and explorer of Australia.
Petrie worked on many excavation sites, mostly in Egypt. He was Edwards Professor of Egyptology at University College London from 1892 to 1933, and Emeritus Professor from 1933. He published many works on excavation. Petrie was knighted in 1923.
