The Commonwealth Consortium for Education was established by a group of education-related Commonwealth NGOs to coordinate their efforts on behalf of Commonwealth education, to stimulate more coherence in their work and to provide a collective mechanism for interaction with ministries and official Commonwealth organisations. Its objectives are to promote the development of education throughout the Commonwealth;
to provide analysis to support the formulation of policies on Commonwealth educational cooperation; to assist Commonwealth inter-governmental agencies to draw on Commonwealth civil-society organisations (CSO) resources and expertise; to develop and disseminate models of good practice in education; to constitute a forum which will promote co-operation by members. CCfE links a wide range of CSOs in education, responding to Commonwealth Governments' encouragement of the formation of civil-society sectoral groups. It was founded in 2001 and formally constituted in 2003 as a group of civil-society bodies committed to education in the Commonwealth. It is a voluntary association with no paid staff. Officers (Chair, Alternate Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Officer) work through an Executive Committee. The Consortium received formal accreditation to the Commonwealth in December 2004.
