Scope and Content

144 x 101 mm., mounted on card. Photographer unknown, possibly H.F. Gros. The print is a group photograph of the fifteen uniformed members of the Natal Shooting team holding their rifles (see below).
The photographic process has not been identified but is the same as Y3055H. The identifications written on the reverse of the mount are also in the same handwriting as those found on Y3055H and both prints were probably presented on the same occasion.
The seven identified members (not individually indicated) are:
George Thresh, Imperial Hotel, Pietermaritzburg. Thresh is found in the 'Natal Almanac' throughout the 1880s.
Scoones, Schoolmaster and afterwards auctioneer, Pietermaritzburg. T.J.E. Scoones is recorded in the 'Natal Almanac' as an auctioneer in 1879. He is not listed in 1881, although by 1886 a Mrs. Scoones is recorded as a boarding house keeper in Pietermaritzburg.
James ?Equed, wool buyer, Pietermaritzburg. No reference found.
Spettigue, Chemist, Pietermaritzburg. Presumably Joseph Tuke Spettigue, a chemist at Ladysmith throughout the 1880s.
McKenzie, farmer, Richmond. Several farmers named MacKenzie are listed throughout the 1880s.
Marwick, farmer. No reference found.
J. Muswell, no reference found.
The RCS collection of almanacs is not complete and some of these names may feature in missing volumes.
