National Education Association pamphlets and papers; 1888-1920

The collection contains the following series:

Photocopied manuscript catalogue of the bulk of this collection, by A.P. Derrington, 1970. Gives details of number, size, imprint, date, title and condition of each of the items in two files numbered 121 and 122. He explains that the papers are prefixed 121 and 122 'since current cataloguing of this subject from the "London source" have progressed as far as 120'. Together with correspondence relating to the collection, 1969-1976 (MS 509/1);

Folders of printed pamphlets predominantly produced by the NEA, but including other reports and publications on educational matters, 1888-1920. The items were catalogued by A.P. Derrington as 121/1-69 (MS 509/2);

Folder of draft, handwritten and typescript articles, reports and speeches, most by A.J. Mundella, undated and 1899-1911. The items were catalogued by A.P. Derrington as 122/1-24 (MS 509/3);

Folder of miscellaneous pages from articles and speeches, unsorted, similar to those in the previous series (MS 509/4);

Pages torn from 'The Board Teacher' magazine, Apr. 1899 to Apr. 1902; and clippings from newspapers, undated (MS 509/5)

The National Education Association was founded in 1888 and aimed to promote a 'free progressive system of national education, publicly controlled and free from sectarian interest'. In 1959 its work was taken over by the Free Church Federal Council. The N.E.A.'s first president was Anthony John Mundella (1825–1897), hosiery manufacturer and politician. Another A.J. Mundella was secretary and president in the early 20th century.

The collection has been arranged into series according to form. Within series, items have been arranged chronologically where possible. The arrangement is that devised by A.J. Derrington in 1970.

By the late 1960s this collection of papers was in the hands of Mr Bob Grove of the Department of Education [later the School of Education] at the University of Nottingham. In 1970 it was classified and catalogued by Arnold P. Derrington of Manchester, who had already catalogued the bulk of the National Education Association's archives held by the Free Church Federal Council. The collection was acquired by the University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts in August 1989.
