Lewis Collection

This is an artificial collection formed from a variety of sources. It includes about 60 letters from Rudyard Kipling (25 of them to Peter and Frances Stanley, 1925-34) and four of his literary manuscripts, and about 20 items concerning the friendship of his daughter Elsie with Harold and Madeline Maxwell and her marriage to Captain George Bambridge, 1924.

Mrs Lisa A. F. Lewis is an authority on the life and works of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), author (see, e.g., Writings on writing by Rudyard Kipling, edited by Sandra Kemp and Lisa Lewis (Cambridge University Press, 1996)). She was a member of the Kipling Society's Council from 1979 to 1997, and sometime its chairman. She has collected letters and drafts by Kipling.

She deposited at the University of Sussex her collection as it existed in February 1981 and further acquisitions as nine additions down to June 1992.

Items in the collection may be consulted for the purpose of private study and personal research, within the controlled environment and restrictions of The Keep's Reading Rooms.
