Administrative correspondence relating to the governance of Donington Grammar School, Lincolnshire, 1919

The collection contains seven leaves of correspondence sent to Professor Henry Swinnerton at University College Nottingham, as a Governor of Donington Grammar School.

Copy letters between George Smith, clerk to Cowley's Charity, Donington, and the Secretary of Holland County Council Education Committee, 26 and 28 February 1919, concerning a scheme put forward by the Governors of Donington Grammar School for building new elementary schools and adapting the present buildings for use as secondary schools; also reporting the appointment of four representatives of the governors to confer with the Education Committee, including Professor Swinnerton; copy letters sent to Professor Swinnerton on 3 March 1919.

Also, two letters sent by George Smith to Professor Swinnerton on 10 and 11 May 1919, enclosing a copy letter from the Secretary of Holland County Council Education Committee, notifying Swinnerton of a meeting of the Holland County Educational Schemes Sub-Committee to be held in Spalding on 16 May.

The papers contain no information about the pupils or curriculum of the school.

A school, almshouses and other charities in Donington, near Spalding, Lincolnshire, were founded out of the estate of Thomas Cowley at the beginning of the 18th century. The Cowley Charity retained a significant role in the funding of what became Donington Grammar School. Following the Education Act of 1918, local education committees took over the running of many schools. In Donington's case, this was Holland County Council which administered one of Lincolnshire's three divisions at the time.
