Scope and Content

Records of Thomas Wheeler & Company relating to its operation and acquisition by Capital & Counties Bank, including customers’ incidental papers and sale and purchase agreement.

Administrative / Biographical History

This private bank was formed in 1812 by Robert Wheeler and his sons, Robert and Thomas. At the same time they purchased a brewery, which they managed alongside the bank. Thomas Wheeler took over as senior partner following the death of his father and brother, and admitted his son Francis and nephew George to the partnership. Branches were opened in 1889 at Beaconsfield, Amersham and Princes Risborough. The bank was acquired by Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) in 1896.
