19th Century Pamphlets

The collection comprises the pamphlet libraries of several notable individuals. Gaps in one sub-collection are often filled by pamphlets in another. There is some overlapping but not as much as might be expected. The libraries show a markedly individual character revealing the interests and connections of their different makers. The 19th century pamphlets are maintained in the Archive.The volumes of each sub-collection have been arranged as nearly as possible in the order in which they must have stood on the shelves of each collector.The collection is numbered in two series. Pamphlets in bound volumes run from 1 to about 22,000; unbound pamphlets from 70,000 to about 74,500. Each serial number identifies one copy of one pamphlet only. Duplicate copies of a particular pamphlet have different serial numbers.The pamphlet volumes are numbered from Pa 1 to Pa 1,225; each volume is marked with the serial numbers of the pamphlets which it contains and the covering dates. Unbound pamphlets are in boxes numbered Pa Box 1 to Pa Box 200, each box being marked with serial numbers and covering dates.

The 19th century pamphlets are available to bona fide researchers.

There are four main and two subsidiary indexes to the pamphlet collection, including: title, author, serial and subject indexes, Index of Bishops' and Archdeacons' Charges, and Manuscript Letters and Annotations index (a supplement to the author index).
