Scope and Content

Letters, a letter book, notes, etc. relating to service in Sarawak, and to the McDougall and Colenso families, including letters between Harriette McDougall and Frances Sarah Colenso, 1811-1886.

Administrative / Biographical History

Francis Thomas McDougall (1817-1886), Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak, studied medicine at the University of Malta, King's College, London and Magdalen, Oxford, where he graduated in 1842. On leaving Oxford he superintended ironworks in South Wales. When the ironworks failed he took holy orders and was ordained in 1845. He was made curate successively of Farnlingham Pigot, St. Mark's Lakenham and of Christ Church, Woburn Square, London. In 1847 he took up an offer of mission work in Borneo under the auspices of Sir James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak. The mission grew large enough to warrant a properly constituted head and in 1855 he was consecrated Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak. In 1867 his health compelled him to return to England and in 1868 he resigned his bishopric. In around the same year he was presented with the vicarage of Godmanchester. He was made Archdeacon of Huntingdon, 1870, Canon of Ely, 1871, Canon at Winchester, 1873 and Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight, 1874. In 1886 he was given the vicarage of Milford. In c1842 he married Harriette Bunyon.
