Administrative / Biographical History

Charles Lindley Wood, son of the 1st Viscount Halifax, succeeded to the peerage in 1885. In 1886 he became an ecclesiastical commissioner and was president of the English Church Union, a High Church organisation, from 1867 to 1919. His son, Edward, was created Baron Irwin in 1925 and served as Viceroy of India, 1926-1931; as Foreign Secretary 1938-1940; and as ambassador to the United States from 1941-1946
