Scope and Content

Minutes, 1834 - 1838.

The minutes provide a record of the work of the society over a four year period, including its' efforts to establish links with similar organisations elsewhere in Scotland. They also contain members lists, rules and regulations, and an extract of their petition to the Houses of Parliament, requesting an increase in church endowments, May 1838.

Administrative / Biographical History

The first meeting of the Society was held on 15 Nov 1834. It was established by Probationers of the Church of Scotland in the Presbytery of Aberdeen, who recognised the need for new churches in their Presbytery, and was constituted to further this cause. Members met regularly over a period of several years, and in May 1838 sent a petition to the Houses of Parliament asking for an increase in church endowments, commensurate with this need.
