Scope and Content

The volume lists mayors and burgesses in a number of distinct series. It begins with the Mayors, in chronological order, 1699-1833. The lists of Burgesses are given in alphabetical sequence, beginning with the Burgesses under 'A', from 1699-1826. A number of names have been added at a later date. In some of the lists, the occupation of the burgesses is also identified.

Administrative / Biographical History

The identity of the compilers of the lists is unknown. A number of different hands are present, indicating that the lists were assembled over a considerable period of time. The purpose of the volume is not clear. A pencil annotation, which indicates that it was at that time for sale, refers to a former owner as Alderman Howitt, presumably Alderman John Howitt, Mayor of Nottingham 1874-1875. It may then have been purchased for the Mechanics Institution Reference Library in Nottingham; it still bears the Institution's book label.

Arrangement

The collection has been divided by document type into series. Within these series, items have been arranged chronologically.
