Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers of John Athelstan Laurie Riley (1858-1945), usually known as Athelstan Riley. Includes general correspondence, correspondence with Archbishops of Canterbury, their chaplains, and other churchmen such as the Earls of Selbourne.

Also includes journals and photographs of visits during the 1880s to a number of countries (including Lapland, Greece (Mt. Athos), Kurdistan, Palestine, Persia, Russia and Yugoslavia), and a series of engagement books, 1886-1914.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Athelstan Laurie Riley (1858-1945) was an Anglican layman active in ecclesiastical affairs, particularly in relations with other Churches, liturgical revision, and religious education. Educated at Eton and Pembroke College, Oxford.

He was a member of the London School Board, 1891-7; a member of the House of Laymen of the Province of Canterbury Vice-President of the Church Union; Chairman of the Anglican and Eastern Church Association; Vice-President of the Alcuin Club.

Married Hon. Andalusia Louisa Charlotte Georgina Molesworth (d.1912) in 1887; four sons & one daughter. Publications include, Athos, (1887); pamplets and articles on education, Eastern Christians and foreign politics.
