Scope and Content

Copy of a Pantheon-Sorbonne University thesis by Anne Hugon. The thesis looks at the introduction of Methodism in the Gold Coast [Ghana] in the nineteenth century, covering strategies for evangelization and methods of dissemination between 1835 and 1847. It is divided into three sections. The first looks at the context of the cultural contact between European missionaries and Gold Coast inhabitants, giving a background to the nineteenth century Gold Coast, including existing religion there, and to British Methodism, including the missionaries themselves, their view of the Gold Coast and their relation to British rule in The Gold Coast. The second explores the missionaries' evangelistic strategies and their reception, including preaching methods, the organisation of the church, Methodist schools, the recruitment of African assitants and the missionaries' secular activities. The final part examines the Methodist community in the Gold Coast, including the community's social structure, resistance and opposition to Methodism, the conversion of 'dissidents' and the entry of African Methodists into politics. The second volume contains the appendices to the thesis.
