Administrative / Biographical History

Vilem Tausky was born in Perov, Moravia. He studied at the Brno Conservatoire, where he was influenced by Janacek. The Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia forced Tausky, who was Jewish, into exile. He conducted in Paris and then escaped to Britain. He was subsequently awarded the Czech Military Cross. Tausky became the musical director of the Carl Rosa Opera Company, 1945-1949. He was the Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra, 1956-1966.
