Administrative / Biographical History

Established by Government in December 2004, WNDC was charged with delivering new jobs, homes and investment across Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. During its operating period, WNDC was one of only three Urban Development Corporations in the UK and the only one outside London. WNDC has invested over £70 million in the regeneration of Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. The company previously had the responsibility to determine strategic planning applications in its area of operation. During its time as a planning authority, they approved over 6,000 new homes and nearly 2 million square miles of commercial development. In April 2012, these planning powers were transferred to local authorities. The WNDC closed in March 2014.

The iCon Sustainability Centre opened to the public in May 2011. Land was provided by Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire Country Council. Concept design was produced by Consarc and the design and construction was done by Winvic Build. iCon is operated by the University of Northampton, working with other universities and the UK Building Research Establishment. The University of Northampton led the initial design consortia that created the iHub Daventry initiative, holding a two-stage competition to design the iHub Daventry building.
