Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In the 1920s , Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons , civil engineering contractors, London, England, became informal partners with the Dyer Co of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, which specialised in designing and building sugar beet factories. In partnership, the two firms built factories for sugar beet companies in England at Peterborough; Bardney, Lincolnshire; Brigg, North Lincolnshire; and Selby, North Yorkshire. Dyer designed the factories and machinery and took charge of construction, while McAlpine provided finance and put their organisation and equipment at Dyer's disposal. The profits from each contract were divided equally between the two firms but McAlpine ceased their interest in beet sugar companies in 1936 .
