This small collection contains the following: one file of letters from Peter Abbs, Gryphon Press, Lewes, East Sussex, 1973-1980; one file of letters relating to the Peggy Volkov Memorial Prize, 1971-1975; one volume of manuscript notes on child development, n.d. [1970s]; one file of children's poetry entries, presumably for a festival or competition, n.d. [1970s]; one typescript article 'On creative thinking', n.d. [c 1974]; one commonplace book, c 1961; five notebooks containing educational and literary research notes and observations, n.d. [1970s]; one file of short stories and plays by MLH, 1930s; one file of correspondence with various publishing companies, also with letters from other writers and educationalists relating to publications, lectures etc., 1964-1977; one file of original poems, short essays, lecture notes etc., n.d. [1950s].

Administrative / Biographical History

Marjorie Lovegrove Hourd (fl 1949-1980) acquired her BA at the University of Bristol, as well as a BLitt from the University of Oxford. From 1953-1969, she was a Lecturer and subsequently Senior Lecturer in Education. She moved to Dartington in c 1971.

She was the author of the following educational works:

The education of the poetic spirit: a study in children's expression in the English lesson (1949); Some emotional aspects of learning (1951); Coming into their own: a study of the idiom of young children revealed in their verse writing (with Getrude E. Cooper) (1959); Relationship in learning (1972); On creative thinking (1974); and Children as writers, 3 : award-winning entries from the 17th Daily Mirror Children's Literary Competition [foreword] (1976).
