Scope and Content

GB 231 MS 2751 Letter, 3 Dec 1898, from James Pittendrigh Macgillivray, Edinburgh, to Mr Smith, Aberdeen, stating that he has accepted the Marquis of Huntly's invitation to meet the Byron Statue Committee in Aberdeen on 9 Dec. He also refers to Morland Simpson and the battle of the sites , and encloses 2 poems, A Painter and The Sculptor (both present).

Administrative / Biographical History

James Pittendrigh Macgillivray (1856 - 1938) was born in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the eldest son of William Macgillivray, sculptor. He received an honorary LL D from the University of Aberdeen in 1909, and from 1921 was King's Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland.
