PAPERS OF F. A. WHITE CONCERNING PÈRE HYACINTHE

Papers of Frederick Anthony White, treasurer of the French Committee of the Anglo-Continental Society, concerning Père Hyacinthe, Rector of the Gallican Catholic Church in Paris. Hyacinthe Loyson was ordained in 1851 and became a Carmelite, but, dissenting from the dogma of papal infallibility promulgated by the Vatican Council in 1870, he adhered to the Old Catholics. The Lambeth Conference of 1878 appointed a commission to communicate with Old Catholics desiring the help of the Church of England, and in the same year a conference at Farnham, held by the Bishop of Winchester, president of the Anglo-Continental Society, resolved to support Père Hyacinthe and to launch a fund for this purpose through the Anglo-Continental Society. At the Farnham Conference, Père Hyacinthe sought to be placed under the supervision of the Anglican episcopate, and the Archbishop of Canterbury selected the Primus of Scotland to exercise this function, subsequently delegated to the Bishop of Edinburgh. When the Bishop of Edinburgh resigned this task, it was assumed by Bishop Jenner until 1888, when the Gallican Catholic Church was placed under the authority of the Archbishop of Utrecht.
