Administrative / Biographical History

Charles Pitman was born 18 Apr 1796 in Portsmouth. He was ordained in 1824 and married Elizabeth Nelson Corrie in the same year. He was sent by the London Missionary Society to Tahiti, arriving on 31 Jul 1825. He then visited a number of locations; Raiatea in Jan 1826, Tahaa from Feb-Apr 1827, Raratonga in May 1827. From May 1827 he was stationed at Ngatangiia. From 1835-36 he visited Moorea and then returned to Raratonga until a trip to Sydney in 1854. The following year he retired, remaining in Sydney until his death on 20 Aug 1884.
