Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1963 the British Employers' Confederation, the Federation of British Industries and the National Association of British Manufacturers together appointed Sir Sam Brown and Sir Henry Benson as commissioners to propose a constitution for a single new body, at this stage referred to simply as the National Industrial Organisation. The Commissioners' Report on the formation of a national industrial organisation appeared in April 1964 and, following discussion by the constituents, the new body, under the name the Confederation of British Industry, came into existence in July 1965.
