Papers of Horace Panting (fl 1916-1998)

Papers associated with school sport, including handbooks and programmes relating to football, cricket, boxing and swimming, 1912-1980s. Also some papers from Horace Panting's time as a student at the Institute of Education, University of London, 1934-1935 and a handwritten diary regarding the evacuation of Holborn Boy's School to Crudwell, Wiltshire, during the Second World War.

Born in London, Horace Panting studied at the East London College (later Queen Mary College) and gained a BSc in Chemistry and Physics, 1933-1934. He then trained at the Institute of Education, University of London, 1934-1935. He was a science teacher holding posts at Holborn Senior Boys' School, 1935-1940; Stratford Grammar School, 1945-1946; and Plaistow Grammar School, 1959-1961. Panting also worked at the West Ham College of Technology (later the North East London Polytechnic) as a Lecturer, 1946-1959, and a Senior Lecturer in Physics, 1961-1977. During World War Two, he was an Experimental Officer in the Ministry of Supply Research Department. He retired in 1977.

Throughout his teaching career he took a keen interest in school sport, both within the schools in which he taught and through involvement with associations such as West Ham Schools Sports Association and the London Schools Cricket Association.
