Administrative / Biographical History

Harry Bernard Cox (1906-1989), CBE (1956), was educated at Upholland Grammar School, and Keble College, Oxford.

In 1930 Cox entered the Colonial Administrative Service in Nigeria. He held the posts of Assistant District Officer (1933); District Officer (1940); Administrative Officer (1947); Director of Commerce and Industries (1949); acting Development Secretary (1953-1955); and acting Commissioner for Nigeria (1955). In 1955 he was appointed as Principal Secretary to the Commissioner for Nigeria in the United Kingdom (1955-1958).

Cox was Chairman of John Holt (Nigeria) Limited (1962); Leader of the Westminster Chamber of Commerce Mission to Nigeria (1974); Deputy Chairman of Thomas Wyatt Nigeria Limited (1967-1983); and Consultant for Knight, Frank & Rutley (1967-1983).
