Brigadier H. R. S. Massy Papers

Records collected by Brigadier H. R. S. Massy, 1805-1909, mainly relating to land in the Pembrokeshire parishes of Rudbaxton, 1805-1845, and Prendergast, 1847-1873.

Brigadier Hugh Royds Stokes Massy (1884-1965) of Cottesmore and Mount Pleasant, Prendergast, Pembrokeshire, accumulated records relating to properties in Pembrokeshire, including The Cotts, a mansion in Prendergast, Pembrokeshire, which had been owned by Louis Devandes in the early 19th century, and the Peel family from 1814. Jonathan Haworth Peel (fl. 1821-1839) held farms and Slouth corn mill in the parish of Rudbaxton, Pembrokeshire, and in 1835 his daughter Helen Peel married Edward Taylor Massy, and in 1839 he bought Cotts from his father-in-law and began building a new residence. This was completed in 1841 and was called Cottesmore. The Massy family lived at Cottesmore until the mid 20th century. The Mount Pleasant estate, Prendergast, was owned by the Priddle family in the mid 19th century. In 1873 the estate was held by Edward Taylor Massy of Cottesmore.
