Digging out the past' was a radio series produced and presented by Alan McWhirr on the topic of archaeology and local history, and broadcast on BBC Radio Leicester from 1979-1989. The last episode in the collection is from May 1989, although this does not seem to be the final episode of the series. The collection is deposited with ROLLR on behalf of the East Midlands Oral History Archive.

Administrative / Biographical History
BBC Radio Leicester went on air on 8 November 1967. The station was the pioneer in the BBC's experimental local radio network. Alan McWhirr (1937-2010) was a teacher and lecturer who mainly worked in Leicestershire, but who also directed archaeological work in Cirencester from 1965 until the mid-1970s. He wrote many articles and books, edited magazines, and made a huge contribution to local archaeology and historical heritage. He presented 'Digging Out the Past' on BBC Radio Leicester between 1979 and 1989.
