Stevenson Macadam was born in Glasgow in 1829. he studied at the Glasgow Mechanics' Institution and then at the University of Giessen where he was awarded the degree of Ph.D.
For a time he worked with Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen (1811-1899) the German chemist, and in 1853 he became a member of the Chemical Society of London. He was a Lecturer and Professor in Chemistry at Edinburgh University, the Edinburgh School of Medicine, and at Surgeons' Hall (the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh).
