Administrative / Biographical History

Foundation

This joint-stock bank was formed in 1835, in Coventry, by a small number of businessmen.

Expansion

The bank rapidly expanded, soon taking over local private bank Beck & Prime (est. 1790). The bank offices were transferred to 25 High Street.

In 1839 it took over the private bank of Goodall, Gulson & Co. (est. 1810). The bank, however, never expanded beyond Coventry.

Takeover

In 1879 an offer of amalgamation with Lloyds was accepted on terms very favourable to the Coventry & Warwickshire shareholders. The whole of the staff of the absorbed bank were retained.
