Administrative / Biographical History

Gary Warren Hart (b 1936), originally a native of Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas, was manager of Senator George McGovern's presidential campaign, 1970-1972, a Democratic Party senator for Colorado, 1975-1987 and a candidate in the Democrats' Presidential nominations, 1984 and 1988. He was also a sometime appellate attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, a special assistant at the U.S. Department of the Interior, and senior counsel to the law firm, Coudert Brothers. He co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century, and established a reputation in the Senate as a political reformer, contributing to defense policy, advocating measures to make the intelligence services more accountable and introducing measures to make the United States more energy independent. He also forecast a major terrorist attack on the United States before the attacks of 11th September 2001. The author of several books, including three novels, he lives in Colorado with his wife, Lee, with whom he has had two children.
