Administrative / Biographical History
Sir William Herrick (1562-1653) was a goldsmith and moneylender, and one of the four Tellers of the Exchequer of Receipt, 1616-23.

Acquisition Information
In 1988 the records were put up for sale through Sotheby's, and Leicestershire Record Office was able to acquire the estate records, while the Bodleian purchased the Exchequer papers (Sotheby's, 15 Dec. 1988, lot 20, with the aid of the National Heritage memorial Fund, MGC/V & A Purchase Grant Fund, the Pilgrim Trust, the Friends of the Bodleian, and the Friends of the National Libraries).

Custodial History
The papers once formed part of a larger group of papers that included Herrick's family letters, official business papers, and records relating to his Leicestershire estate, held at Beaumanor, purchased by Sir William Herrick and in the 19th century the seat of the Perry-Herrick family.
Herrick family, business and estate papers, 16th to 19th century, were purchased by the Bodleian Library in 1968, and are now MSS. Eng. hist. b. 216, c. 474-84. The remainder of the Herrick archive was deposited with Lecistershire Record Office in 1972. The archive included title deeds and papers for Leicestershire estates and properties in other counties, manorial records and miscellaneous Herrick family papers, as well as the Exchequer records described below.
