Petty Sessions began to appear at the beginning of the 18th century as extra meetings to lessen the burden on Justices of the Peace in Quarter Sessions. The normal practice was to subdivide a shire into geographical divisions, with each magistrate being assigned to a particular division. The Sessions were held twice monthly in each division. The Petty Sessions dealt mainly with minor cases such as drunkenness, assaults, larceny, trespassing, fraud and juvenile cases, as well as ale licensing and adoption. The county of Flintshire was divided originally into the Divisions of Caerwys, Flint, Hawarden, Holywell, Hope, Mold, Northop, Overton, Prestatyn, and Rhuddlan. From 1953, Overton became Maelor Division. In 1954, Holywell and Caerwys amalgamated. On 1 April 1974, Flint amalgamated with Holywell and Caerwys to become Flint Division; Mold and Northop amalgamated to become Mold; and Hawarden and Hope amalgamated to become Hawarden. At the same time, Prestatyn and Rhuddlan joined together as Rhuddlan Division. In 1997 Berwyn, Flintshire and Maelor division was created.
