Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Strathclyde: Highlights

Reports of the Curator of the Collins Gallery, the Director of the Drama Centre at the Ramshorn Theatre, and the Director of the University of Strathclyde Music Society.

The Strathclyde Theatre Group was a collaboration between the University of Strathclyde and the people of Glasgow, providing an important, informal academy of theatre arts for the city, the University and Scotland. It was a radical, experimental company and helped launch the careers of many actors, directors and writers.

The Royal College of Science and Technology Music Society was formed in 1960 as a subsection of the College's Dramatic Society with the object of providing background or accompaniment for the Dramatic Society’s shows. Support was such however that, in 1961, a separate society was formed with the aim of promoting performance and interest in all forms of music. In 1964, the society was renamed the University of Strathclyde Music Society. It was affiliated to the University of Strathclyde Students' Association. Membership of the Society was originally only open to students but was later open to staff as well.

The Collins Gallery presented temporary exhibitions and events spanning contemporary fine and applied art, sculpture, photography, local history and architecture. It also housed the University's collections of fine art, historical scientific instruments and medals. The Gallery closed in May 2012.
