Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Francis Mudie was born in Broughton Ferry and educated at Seafield House, Fettes and King's College, Cambridge. As a schoolmaster at Clifton and Eton, he took the examination for the Indian Civil Service before the war and in 1914 joined the 6th Battalion, City of London Rifles before transferring to the 2/4th Somerset Light Infantry and embarking for India. He served with the 10th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, the 16th Rajputs and the 127th Baluchis at Calcutta.
