Scope and Content

The papers consist mostly of articles written and research work carried out by W. Gilbert Williams such as :

Rhostryfan encroachments - a short account of the encroachments made upon the common lands in Rhostryfan, 1750-1850.

Notes and transcripts of records of Llandwrog and Llanwnda district.

Some Old Families of Dinlle, 1500-1650.

Notes on Edmund Glynn of Hendre, Llanwnda.

Transcript of a Llanwnda Rate Book for 1844.

A short memoir of the Rev. Richard Farringdon, (1702-1772).

An Old Gadlys Family (Llanwnda).

History of Betws Gwernrhiw, pa. Llandwrog, 1943.

Also included is a copy abstract of title to a Pen-y-groes smithy and messuage of Wernlas Wen, pa. Llanwnda with manuscript notes by W. Gilbert Williams on devolution, 1856; and a post card from Cassie Davies of Tregaron to W. Gilbert Williams, 1955.

Administrative / Biographical History

W. Gilbert Williams was born in Rhostryfan, Gwynedd in 1874. In his early twenties, he became headmaster of Felinwnda School and then in 1918 he moved to Rhostryfan Parish School where he stayed until his retirement in 1935. He was also a councillor and a deacon and one of the people behind the establishment of the Caernarfonshire Historical Society.

He is the author of several books on local history and he contributed regularly to newspapers and periodicals such as Y Genedl and the Transactions of the Caernarvonshire Historical Society. As a result of his research into local history, he received an honorary M.A. degree. He died in 1966.
