Administrative / Biographical History
Samuel Burnside Boyd McElderry (1885-1984) worked in the Hong Kong Administrative Service, 1909-1928. He then gained the post of Deputy Chief Secretary, Tanganyika, 1929-1933 and Chief Secretary, Zanzibar, 1933-1940. He was attached to the office of High Commissioner for Basutoland, Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland (Pretoria and Cape Town), 1940-1945, and was then temporarily employed by the Colonial Office, 1945-1946. He was a Member of Council, Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, 1951-1970 and a member of the Royal National Institute for the Blind, 1958-1970. In 1913 he married Mildred Mary Orme, with whom he had three daughters.
