Administrative / Biographical History

This collection consists of the papers from the Joint Board of Examiners of the Scottish Universities , the Scottish Universities Entrance Board, the Scottish Universities Council on Entrance and the Scottish Council for the Validation of courses for Teachers. The Joint Board of Examiners of the Scottish Universities was formed in 1892  and was responsible for administering the Scottish Universities preliminary examinations and issuing certificates of academic fitness which were required for admission to degree courses at the Scottish Universities. In 1918  the Joint Board was superseded by the Scottish Universities Entrance Board which was in existence until 1968  , when it was replaced by the Scottish Universities Council on Entrance . The final preliminary examiniations were held in 1971  , after which date the Council's other functions continued until 1994  . Such functions included reviewing the general entrance requirements of the universities, promoting consultation on behalf of the universities with the Scottish Education Department, the Scottish Certificate of Education Examination Board, other British and overseas school and further education examining bodies, the Standing Conference on University Entrance, the Universities Central Council on Admissions and bodies representing schools and teachers. The Scottish Universities Council on Entrance ceased to exist in 1994  , with UCAS and COSHEP taking over the responsibilities of its predecessors.
