Administrative / Biographical History

Brigadier Harry Ewart Hopthrow (1896-1992) was educated at Queen Elizabeth' s Grammar School, Gainsborough, Lincs, and served with the Royal Engineers in France during the First World War. In 1920 he entered Loughborough College on the O-13 diploma scheme for ex-service officers to study Mechanical Engineering. He was awarded a first class diploma in 1923. He also served with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War and was Director of Fortifications and Works at the War Office 1943-45. He worked for ICI Ltd between the wars and from 1945-68 was Secretary and President of the Royal Institution.
