Scope and Content

Papers concerning the Home Counties Labour Association and the National Committee of Constituency Labour Parties, two left wing pressure groups of which Garnsworthy was chairman. There is also correspondence dealing with the running of these groups, Labour Party pamphlets from World War II and a Labour Party song sheet.

  • Folder 1. Correspondence and copies of correspondence of ER Simmons of the Surrey Labour Federation and Bea Greene with GR Shepherd, the Labour Party National Agent and the Secretary TS Middleton about the above associations, also carbon copy of letter (anon) to Hugh Dalton 1934 - 1935.
  • Folder 2. Papers of the Home Counties Labour Association otherwise the Southern and Labour Counties Association of Labour Parties including executive committee minutes and reports General Assembly minutes and reports (not complete sets) agendas, circular letters etc. Also speech by Garnsworthy to the second annual assembly. 1939.

Administrative / Biographical History

Charles James Garnsworthy 1906-1974

Charles Garnsworthy was educated at Wellington School and then joined the building industry in 1925 and an insurance agency in 1931. However his main interest was politics becoming a member of the Banstead UDC, 1937 - 1947, and Surrey County Council 1952 - 1974 (Alderman 1966 - 1974). Garnsworthy was also a co-opted member of the Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers and a member of the London County Council's Children's Committee 1949 - 1954.

He contested Reigate as a Labour candidate in 1945, 1950, 1951, 1955, 1960 and 1964. He was made a government whip in 1974. In 1967 Garnsworthy was created Baron (Life Peer) of Reigate.
