Certificates, correspondence and testimonials

The collection contains certificates and paperwork belonging to Thomas J Nicholl (b. 25/09/1879 - d. 30/05/1959) and Grace Nicholl nee O'Donoughue (b. circa 1904). Thomas Nicholl first qualified as a physician in 1902, before qualifying as a surgeon in the same year. Over the course of his career, Thomas Nicholl continued to expand his list of qualifications, from passing examinations on midwifery and diseases peculiar to women and children, to a course introduction to mental deficiencies. He worked as a surgeon in various institutions, and within the Royal Navy during the First World War. Meanwhile, Grace O'Donoughue qualified as a nurse in 1934, and then as a midwife the following year, and finally as a health visitor in 1937. Grace previously worked in Barley Mow Welfare Centre and East Islington Mothers' and Babies' Welfare Centre, and in her later years worked in the Royal Automobile Club until her retirement in 1971.
