Administrative / Biographical History
Blaenau Gwent Borough Council came into existence on 1 April 1974 as one of the five districts of the new county of Gwent. It consisted of the former Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Nantyglo & Blaina and Tredegar Urban Districts and part of Crickhowell Rural District. It had a population of about 77 thousand. The Council comprised 44 elected councillors, including a Mayor and a Council Leader. Their work was overseen by several committees, namely Leisure, Finance, Housing Services, Estates, Economic Development, Planning, Environmental Services, DSO Board, Highways & Transportation and Personnel. The principal officers employed by the Council were the Chief Executive, Borough Secretary, Borough Solicitor, Director of Personnel Services, Director of Finance, Director of Housing, Director of Architecture, Director of Works, Director of Environmental Health, Director of Leisure & Amenities and the Director of Engineering. Blaenau Gwent Borough Council was abolished in 1996. It was succeeded by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, an unitary authority combining the functions of the Borough Council and Gwent County Council.
